'King of Polish fans' heads for his 11th World Cup

78-year-old Andrzej "Bobo" Bobowski is ready to go for his 11th World Cup event.

Bobo, the self-proclaimed “King of Polish fans”, has attended every World Cup tournament since 1978, including those for which Polish national football team did not manage to qualify.

Wearing his patriotic, red-and-white outfit and a crown with hanging little footballs, Bobo is preparing for another adventure. “I am going to watch our game against Senegal in Moscow. Then, I will fly to Kazań and Wołgograd (places of next Polish team’s games in Russia),” Mr Bobowski says.

The so-called “King of Polish fans” expects fans to give him an official welcome in Kazań. “They will give me a royal welcome,” he assures.

Devoted fan

Mr Bobowski, born in Warsaw, has watched 135 games of football World Cup so far. He saw his first match in 1978 in Argentina, when he got a ticket from his wife at that time. Since then Bobo remarried but even at the age of 78 he still prefers to travel alone.

“I worked out my routes using the internet: first - where I land, second - the hotel, third - how to get to the stadium from the hotel,” Bobo says.

The outfits for the upcoming event are already prepared. He has a t-shirt with 2018 tournament logo on the front, and list of all WCs he has attended, with question mark next to “Qatar 2022” on the back for everyday wear. On a match day Bobo will wear a “regal” red-and-white coat with furry collar and white-eagle crest on the back, and on his head he will have a soft golden crown with badges from all World Cup events he has attended, with the slogan “King of Polish fans”.
