Suspected drug cartel boss extradited to Poland

A 76-year-old Polish citizen suspected of running an international drug cartel has been extradited to Poland from Montenegro, officers said.

Police have reported that the suspect, Wojciech K., had had a European Arrest Warrant placed on him following suspicions that he was running a group allegedly trafficking hashish and cocaine to Europe. According to the report, Wojciech K. had been hiding in the town of Budva on the Montenegrin coast since mid-2017.

According to the Polish police, the gang allegedly run by the suspect had been in operation between 2004 and 2016, during which time they are suspected of having smuggled more than 20 tons of hashish from Morocco and as much as 1.5 tons of cocaine from South America. The group is reported to have moved the drugs in shipments weighing from several hundred kilograms to over a ton at a time.

The drugs, allegedly worth a total of PLN 320 mln (EUR 80 mln), were brought into Europe through Spain, and were then transported across the continent to Poland, Belgium, Scandinavia and the UK.

As many as 13 other suspects have been detained in connection with the case, and luxury apartments, boats and cars have been seized by police officers in both Spain and Poland.
