Pole wins first Chopin contest on period instruments

Eight Polish pianists have advanced to the second stage of the 1st International Chopin Competition Played on Period Instruments held in Warsaw.

The winners of the contest were announced on Thursday at the National Philharmonic in Warsaw. The joint second place was taken by Japanese pianist Naruhiko Kawaguchi and Pole Aleksandra Świgut. The third award and a special reward for performing mazurkas was received by Krzysztof Książek.

Russian pianist Dmitry Ablogin and French musician Antoine de Grolee got an honourable mention during the final phase of the festival.

A concert of the winners will take place on Friday at the Concert Hall of National Philharmonic in Warsaw during the celebration gala. The event will be broadcast by Polish national radio and television.

The contest was organized to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Polish independence. The main organizer is the National Frédéric Chopin Institute, along with Polish national TV and radio broadcasters.

For the purposes of the contest, organisers gathered 19 pianos from Frédéric Chopin’s lifetime. The aim of the contest, apart from choosing the most impressive pianist personalities, was the popularisation of music performed on period instruments.
