Aleksandra Rudzińska won gold in speed climbing at the 2018 Climbing World Championships on Thursday in Innsbruck, Austria.
In the final duel, she beat another Pole, Anna Brożek for a time of 7.56s.
After passing the first round, the Polish champion beat her fellow countrywomen on her way for the triumph: Patrycja Chudziak in the quarterfinal, Aleksandra Kałucka in the semifinal and Anna Brożek in the final competition.
The remarkable performance of Polish female climbers is very promising amid the upcoming Summer Olympics in Tokyo. In 2020, sport climbing will be one of five new disciplines to debut as an Olympic event, and now Poland will have hopes for medals in speed climbing.
The event will feature three disciplines: speed climbing, bouldering and lead climbing. At the Olympic Games, each climber will compete in all those disciplines, and the combined results will be the basis of the final ranking.
Sport climbing is a form of climbing single – or multi-pitch routes, protected by permanently-fixed anchors drilled into the rock.
Any equipment besides safety ropes is forbidden and competitors have to climb using only their bare hands and climbing shoes.
